I can get along with anyone, and I don’t
understand why everyone else can’t
I can get along with, and find common ground with almost anyone. I grew up
as the son of an Airforce enlisted man. We traveled all over the country and
lived in Japan for a while, that’s where I graduated from High School, so I
have a hard time wrapping my head around racial hatred. I’m not naive
enough to believe that racism doesn’t exist in the military, hate and
ignorance is everywhere, but I’m saying that it wasn’t in your face.
At Yokota Airforce Base in Japan, the benches and picnic tables would
be full of kids from all races and backgrounds, including mixed-race kids.
We never thought anything of it, So I wonder why other people can’t do
the same thing if teenagers can do it.
One of my earliest memories, we were stationed at a base in Alaska, and our
neighbors were an interracial couple with little kids that my mom babysat.
This was in the sixties.
My point is: we can all get along if we choose too. If we focus on the past,
the wrongs of other generations. We will never get to where we need to get
to as a country. Forgiveness and understanding are beautiful things, and
we all will be better off if we practiced those virtues.
